Drawing the boundaries of ‘good citizenship’ through state-led urban redevelopment in Dikmen Valley

This article explores the role of contemporary urban redevelopment in invoking a renegotiation citizenship. There has been wide acknowledgement that neoliberalism is political project involving transformations state–market–citizen relations. However, scholarly emphasis on market-led principles remaking places and people falls short acknowledging aspirations struggles intrude processes inclusion exclusion at city scale. Focussing case Turkey, where neoliberal policies practices have linked to central government’s ambitions, illustrates projects help state actors realign citizenship with authoritarian regime. A focus state-led interventions from perspective bordering ‘good citizen’ suggests are mobilised by promote official agendas. Drawing in-depth interviews, photos observations 9-month fieldwork Dikmen Valley (Ankara), this ethnographically documents how ideals an context differ promotion consumerist, aspirational active citizens.
